The Balkans

Building Unity Across
the Balkans

In a region shaped by deep cultural, national and religious differences, Christian leaders are building relationships that cross traditional divides. Movement.org is helping bring leaders together to address the challenges facing their cities and pursue Gospel-centered change across the Balkans.

Demographics

Evangelical Christians represent a small minority of the population across much of the Balkans, with estimates below 1% in several countries. This creates significant opportunities for church collaboration, leadership development and Gospel movements throughout the region.

Orthodox Christianity remains the dominant religious tradition across much of the Balkans, though religious identity is often closely connected to national culture and family tradition rather than active religious practice.

Youth unemployment remains a major challenge across the Western Balkans, exceeding 20% in several countries and limiting opportunities for the region’s next generation.

Nearly one-quarter of people born in the Western Balkans now live outside the region, as continued emigration contributes to population decline, an aging population and workforce shortages.

A Growing Movement

Movement.org now has a presence across Greece, Albania, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, and Serbia.

Movement Day

Movement Day Balkan Cities and Movement Day Scholars Training were held on March 9-13, 2026, near Thessaloniki, uniting 180 leaders from 14 nations. Despite common hostility between people groups and countries in this region, attendees were united in seeking God and working together to reach their cities.

Signs of Hope

In 2026, Movement.org released Why Balkan Cities: Signs of Hope in the Balkans, a collection of stories from leaders who are impacting Greece, North Macedonia, Albania, Serbia, and other countries.
